The YHA Bushies quietly did their bit for international diplomacy.
They have successfully hosted 11 outdoor adventurers from the USA, England, Italy and Japan on a bushwalking exchange program. Club member Maria Bowdler had the mammoth task of planning and co-ordinating the two weeks – but everyone in the club pitched in, providing billets as well as food for the welcoming and farewell feasts, acting as guides around the historic precincts of Teneriffe, or providing walking companionship in the Girraween, Lamington, and Fraser Island National Parks. Two members provided musical entertainment!
To be honest the YHA Bushies are not entirely altruistic—next time it’s their turn at being international guests. This exchange program has been going since 1999 when YHA Bushwalkers Queensland hosted the Club Alpino Italiano in South East Queensland. They, in turn have reciprocated, hosting YHA Bushies in Italy in areas around Pisa, Milano, the Dolomites, and Sicily. There have also been exchanges organised with the Seattle Mountaineers, the Calgary Esso Annuitants, and CAI-PNW resulting in memorable trips for YHA Bushies walking the Olympic Peninsula and Mt Rainer, as well as the Cascades, the Rockies and the Kananaskis mountains.
So if you are looking for international travel of a different flavour or just want to do your bit for international relations, then these experiences are just one among many walks and activities our members enjoy, both within Australia and in other countries. Explore our website and join!
